Renting a boat in Syros: what to ask
Boat rentals in Syros run from small self-drive motorboats out of Foinikas to skippered sailing cruises along the Cyclades. Syros Boats, based in Foinikas, rents small motorboats such as the Nireus 490 Optima, a 30HP boat that carries up to 4 people; the operator states that no licence is required and that renters are briefed on operating the boat, anchoring and emergency procedures before setting out. Day Cruises Syros - Arkana Marine Sailboat Rental runs day cruises on the sailing boat Arsinoe with Captain Nick, and the operator's own text describes a traditional seafood lunch, fresh fruit and drinks included. Syros Infinity Blue, based in Poseidonia, runs boat trips from Agathopes Marina with capacity for up to 7 guests and takes bookings for special occasions such as wedding proposals and parties. Syros Adventures - Perla 1 Cruises in Kini offers a classic trip, a private escape and a St. Stephen's cave tour, and operates daily from 10:30 to 18:30. Other operators in Ermoupolis and Foinikas cover sailing cruises, yacht charters and general boat hire. Prices are not listed here, so ask each operator directly about rates, availability and what is included.

Questions to ask
Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Syros?
Syros Boats states that its small motorboats can be used without a licence, and that renters are briefed on operating the boat, anchoring and emergency procedures before setting out. For any other operator, ask directly whether a licence is required for the boat you want.
Can I book a boat with a captain or crew?
Several operators run skippered sailing trips. Day Cruises Syros - Arkana Marine Sailboat Rental and Arkanamarine sail with Captain Nick, and Escale Yachting and Capsiwa Sailing work with sailing boats and arrange cruises directly with customers. Confirm with each business who is on board and what the crew arrangements are.
Are boats available for parties or special occasions?
Syros Infinity Blue states that it takes bookings for special occasions such as wedding proposals and parties, with trips from Agathopes Marina for up to 7 guests. Syros Adventures - Perla 1 Cruises also lists private tours and events. Ask the operator about group size, timing and what the booking includes.
